Dynamic Pricing with Applications to the Airline Industry

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Aniko Oery and Kevin Williams are seeking to recruit one highly skilled and motivated individual to join the Pre-doctoral Fellowship program to work in the areas of applied microeconomics / industrial organization, with a focus on dynamic pricing. The prospective pre-doctoral fellow will work on projects studying the U.S. airline industry, an industry that directly supports over two million jobs and contributes over $700 billion to the US economy. The pre-doctoral fellow will work with comprehensive airline data, including clickstream data that track hundreds of millions of "clicks" online and detailed booking and pricing data. Sample tasks the candidate will perform are: How do consumers shop for tickets; How flexible are consumers in their travel planes; How do airlines respond to rivals' price changes; What happens when a competitor starts service on a route with loyal or non-loyal customers?

During the one or two-year fellowship, the successful candidate will develop her/his own research agenda under the supervision of Professors Oery and Williams at the Yale School of Management.

This position is intended to provide training in the field of economics research to prepare a candidate for doctoral studies in graduate school. This position presents an opportunity for recent graduates to begin training for a career in research and will serve as a stepping stone to doctoral studies.

 

REQUISITE SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful candidates must have strong communication skills and be proficient in Python (multiprocessing, pandas, json, re, etc.). Familiarity with SQL preferred. Strong analytical skills, including exposure to proof-based math classes required. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
