Energy and Environmental Economics Research Fellow

Project and Position Description:

Nicholas Ryan, Associate Professor of Economics at Yale, affiliated with the Yale Economic Growth Center, is looking to hire one skilled and motivated pre-doctoral research fellow to work as part of his research team. The position will involve assistance with all stages of empirical research in projects focused on energy markets and environmental regulation in low and middle income countries. Prof. Ryan's work includes studies on the effect of power grid capacity on electricity prices, how firms make decisions about energy-efficiency and how environmental regulation can be designed to best abate pollution at low social cost. This position is data-intensive, and the selected candidate will be expected to analyze survey data, administrative data, and intervention monitoring data. Good writing skills are valued. Fellows join in weekly lab meetings and benefit from opportunities to work with Prof. Ryan and other academic economists at Yale and other universities. The position is offered for one year, with a strong preference for a second year renewal.

Responsibilities for this position include:
• Cleaning and managing large datasets;
• Conducting statistical analyses of data using Stata, R, Matlab, or other relevant software;
• Preparing literature reviews, background research, and other draft content for grant proposals and academic papers;
• Drafting project reports, slide-decks, research protocols, and other project documents;
• Working with field research teams, including travel to study sites as required (South Asia, multiple sites)

 

Requisite Skills and Qualifications:

- Strong quantitative background: This could include Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, International Development, or other degrees with substantial quantitative coursework
- Strong computer skills including using various software including Matlab, R and Stata. Programming experience in these languages and general purpose languages like Python and reproducibility tools like GitHub a strong plus
- Strong academic record
