Tobin Pre-Doctoral Fellowship

Research on Health Care in The U.S.

FACULTY SUPERVISOR:

Zack Cooper

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Professor Cooper is recruiting one or more Fellow(s) to work with him and his co-authors on the following projects:

Health Insurance: This project will study the variation and growth in insurance premiums for the privately insured.

Hospital Competition: This project will study who collects the rents from hospital mergers and the consequences of rising health care costs on people, places, and firms.

State-Based Interventions: This project will study the effect of state efforts to address high hospital spending including how the programs have impacted overall spending, health insurance premiums, provider prices, labor market outcomes, quality, and access to care.

Research from the team has been cited in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Economist and presented at the White House, the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Centers from Medicare and Medicaid Services. Our aim is to produce rigorous scholarship that can directly inform public policy.

Candidates should have a long-term interest in pursuing economics-related research. The projects will involve building large datasets, analyzing data, creating presentations, and helping to prepare manuscripts. Previous pre-doctoral fellows have co-authored papers with the research team and regularly interact with faculty inside and outside of Yale. We have an excellent placement record, and previous fellows have gone on to top PhD programs in Economics, Public Policy, and Health Economics.
