The Evolution of U.S. Firms’ Retirement Plan Offerings: Evidence from a New Panel Data Set

Researchers reviewed employer-sponsored defined contribution (DC) retirement plans over time to evaluate how they have changed.

Researchers constructed a dataset, hand coding details in narrative plan descriptions with a focus on match schedules, vesting schedules, and the extent of ‘auto-features.’ They find that, when offered, employee-sponsored matching has become more generous over time, with the exception of during the Great Recession. Researchers also provide insight into changes in vesting schedules and auto-enrollment plans over time.
