Measuring voluntary and policy-induced social distancing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic

Published: April 2021
Researchers studied the impact of policy change on voluntary behavior (e.g., staying home) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Using smart phone data and tracking policy responses across the country, researchers disentangle the relationship between Americans' choices around staying home and their local governments' stay-at-home orders. They found that stay-at-home orders and voluntary responses to reported COVID-19 cases both contributed to behavior change. They also found wide variation in the effect of a stay-at-home order based on the county.
