Nursing Home Staff Networks and COVID-19

Published: July 2020
Researchers perform a large-scale analysis of nursing home connections via shared staff and contractors, seeking to better understand the cause of COVID-19 outbreaks in nursing homes that persisted after restrictions began in March 2020.

Using geolocation data from 50 million smartphones, researchers analyzed the frequency with which nursing home staff and contractors entered multiple nursing homes, making them potential spreaders of contagions. They find that 5.1 percent of smartphone users who visit a nursing home for at least one hour also visit another facility during our 11-week study period—even after visitor restrictions were imposed. Researchers concluded that federal regulatory metrics for nursing home quality were not correlated with disease outbreaks, but level of staff connectedness was, providing important insights for nursing homes and policymakers aiming to protect nursing homes.
