Risk compensation and face mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic

Published: February 2021
Researchers analyze the interaction between mask mandates and other risk compensation behavior during COVID-19.

Using SafeGraph smart device location data, researchers examine the amount of time spent at home by smart device users, depending on where they lived and what mask mandates were in place at various times. They find that people were more likely to spend more time in public places and commercial locations -- most notably, restaurants -- in locations that had mask mandates. This finding has important implications for the impact of mask mandates on economic recovery during a pandemic.
