On Wednesday, September 4, the Tobin Center hosted a webinar on hospital competition and M&A activity in the US. The program featured Martin Gaynor, the EJ Barone University Professor of Economics and Health Policy at Carnegie Mellon and former Director of the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission, Stuart Craig, a PhD student at the Wharton School, Leemore Dafny, the Bruce V. Rauner Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and former Associate Director of Healthcare and Antitrust at the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission, and Zack Cooper, Associate Professor of Public Health and Economics at Yale University. The panelists presented their own academic research on hospital competition, prices, and efficiency and discussed what options policy-makers should consider to address rising health care costs in the US.
