Research on Eviction and Homelessness

Project and Position Description:

This is a full-time pre-doctoral fellow position under the supervision of Professors John Eric Humphries (Yale Dept. of Economics) and Winnie van Dijk (Yale Dept. of Economics). The pre-doctoral fellow will be engaged in all stages of the research process, including conceptual development, data collection, data analysis, and writing. The pre-doctoral fellow will work closely with Professors Humphries and van Dijk, as well as their co-authors. Responsibilities include analyzing large-scale survey and administrative data, estimating returns to education, and contributing to research papers. The position offers opportunities to work with restricted-access data and to develop a broad range of research skills.

This pre-doctoral research position will support several empirical research projects spanning fields including public, urban, and labor economics, using rich and novel datasets and frontier econometric techniques for program evaluation. Topics studied include: (1) Understanding the impact of legal aid programs; (2) Evaluation of homelessness and eviction prevention programs; and (3) Evaluating the effects of eviction on adults’ and children’s future criminal justice involvement.

 

Requisite Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a strong quantitative background, programming skills, the ability to work independently and solve problems, and a long-term interest in pursuing research in economics or an adjacent field. Candidates should also have strong communication skills and the ability to write clearly. Prior research experience is not required, but is a plus.

Background in economics is a plus but not required; candidates with strong technical skills who are interested in learning more about economics are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants typically have Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees with substantial coursework in economics, math, and/or computer science.
