Labor market trends and unemployment insurance generosity during the pandemic
Published: July 2020
Researchers aimed to understand the impact of COVID-19 unemployment insurance of $600 per week on workers returning to work.
Using weekly data from small business timesheets via Homebase, researchers compared high frequency data of worker hours to the Current Population Survey to measure the impact of unemployment insurance on declines in employment. They find that larger increases in unemployment insurance did not impact employment, and that the rate of return to work for people who received unemployment insurance is the same as it was prior to the benefit expansion.
