It Takes a Village: The Economics of Parenting with Neighborhood and Peer Effects

Researchers analyze the impact of peer group vs. parental involvement on children's skill accumulation.

Using a model in which both peer and parental inputs shape skill accumulation, researchers evaluate potential policy interventions that, in theory, aim to aid U.S. high school students. They find that certain interventions, such as busing children to "more favorable" neighborhoods are effective. However, they find that scaling such interventions can reduce their impacts as parental inputs resist children's integration into new peer groups.
